Arc maintains a current Information and Referral system of services throughout the Tri-State area for individuals with developmental disabilities. Arc works with other service agencies, public schools, colleges and libraries to offer as resources to our clients.
The Arc of the Mid-South advocates for the rights of all people with developmental disabilities. Arc maintains an active Advocacy Committee. They offer advocacy training to parents so that they may train the community to advocate for the rights and fairness for people with developmental disabilities. Our advocacy committee lobby government officials concerning laws affecting people with disabilities on a local, state and national level. Arc's advocacy committee works with a network of similar agencies to provide a support system to Mid-South families. Arc assists parents with understanding laws such as the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
Prevention Campaign
Arc promotes a Disability Prevention Campaign. Our main focus is Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. This is a condition that causes mental retardation in babies when they are exposed to alcohol in the womb. Arc encourages all mothers not to drink alcohol during pregnancy. We are approved to teach disability prevention in Memphis and Shelby County Schools. The curriculum is designed to teach adolescents about preventing birth defects. Prevention presentations are also available for schools, churches, social agencies and civic groups.
