Another for the Hershey gang!! And….another first for The Arc of the Mid-South!!!
Our first Annual Doubles Tennis Tournament was a success thanks to the many players from various companies and organizations who turned out amid hot scorching summer temperatures on Saturday July 31st and Sunday August 1st at the Roark-Whitehaven Tennis Center.
Because of the extreme hot temperatures, the tournament was held on the indoor air-conditioned courts at the center with 12 teams competing for championship trophies in Men’s 3.5, Mixed and Seniors categories. The Arc congratulates Charles Taylor and A.W. Moering of the Hershey Company, Men’s tournament champions; Willie Brantley, Jr. and Samantha Clark, Mixed champions; and the United Way’s Robert Mebane and Darius Wheeler, Senior’s champions. All of the winning teams were presented trophies. Other participants in the event included Arc of the Mid-South staff member Benjamin Greene in addition to Gala Advisory Committee member, Angela Carter of Sam’s.
Players have already expressed interest in registering for next year’s tournament which will most likely be held at the same location. Most of the participants consider the Roark-Whitehaven Center their “home courts”, since they play at the center on a regular basis.
Plans are already underway for 2011, as dates are being considered during the month of April in hopes having more teams and using the outdoor courts for overflow. “For this to be the agency’s first event, it was a good turnout. Now that we have this one out of the way and folks know about The Arc, next year’s event will probably be bigger”, says Kent Smith, Director of the center. With players from the Hershey Company winning the overall team championship in addition to the 2010 Wheelchair Basketball Tournament held earlier this year, the company has earned “team bragging rights”. According to Employee Relations Manager Andrea Goodman, “we came to win and bring home the trophy just like we did at the wheelchair basketball tournament”.
The excitement, in anticipation of next year’s event is already building!
